Christmas toy drive gives kids in the North a reason to celebrate
Health minister Leona Aglukkaq sat on Santa's knee Monday morning in Thomson Terminals' Rexdale warehouse.Her wish - toys this Christmas for thousands of children in Canada's far north.
Santa works fast.
Already, Canadian Toy Association members donated $80,000 worth of toys, half of which came from seven companies: Crayola, Hasbro, K'Nex, Mattel, MGA, Schleich and Spin Master.
"Growing up in Canada's north, I know that this kind and generous donation of toys will make a huge impact on thousands of families," said Aglukkaq, MP for Nunavut. "It is heartwarming to see these agencies and companies - and now the general public, too - recognize the need and take action together to bring smiles to the faces of the children of the north."
Aglukkaq and arguably her most famous constituent, Santa Claus, made the announcement before a pile of Barbies, little tikes Makin' Mud Pies, Disney Magic Wand Laptops, Hello Kitty Candy Shop, Toy Story Hot Wheels, Rumbly Tummy Pooh and $5,000 in toys donated by the Toronto Zoo, including stuffed animals.
This Sunday, children may also donate a toy at the 107th annual Santa Claus Parade.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police in dress uniform will collect the toys outside the Bloor Street West entrance of the Royal Ontario Museum.
"Essentially, it's simple. There is not a single toy store up north within 20,000-square-miles. Enjoying a gift is a big part of the holiday season," Peter Beresford, president of the Toronto Santa Claus Parade said as he stood before the sea of toys in Thomson's warehouse.
Thomson has stored 20 skids of toys, as well as extra props and materials for The Santa Claus Parade.
Soon it will transport the toys to aircraft carriers for their flight up north. There RCMP officers will deliver the toys to children, some to remote areas, in 44 communities in the Northwest Terrorities and in Nunavut.
Officers deliver the toys to children on foot, in police vehicles - even by snowmobile.
