For Barney Frank's constituents, a jolt

As word spread from Newton to New Bedford, constituents in Frank’s Fourth Congressional District shared that look of surprise. From steadfast admirers to sometime supporters and even critics, many interviewed said they had imagined that Frank, first elected in 1980, would remain a fixture for years to come.

“I just thought he’d always be there, sort of [like] Ted Kennedy,’’ said Patricia Hillman, 64, a Chestnut Hill resident who always voted for Frank. “He went through some rough times, but I thought he had the people’s best interests at heart.’’

The qualities that made Frank a thorn in the side of conservatives and a national bogeyman for the far right made him a hero to supporters in his home city.

“He has a wonderful sense of values, but he also has enough strength to have had a voice,’’ said Aurelie Goodwin, 78, a psychologist and longtime supporter who applauded Frank for never being “a shrinking violet.’’

At the southern end of the district, Darren Diodati acknowledged that Frank had done yeoman’s work for the fishing industry. But he thought Frank’s fingerprints were all over the collapse of the housing market and the economy, as Frank’s opponent, Sean Bielat, had said in a race the incumbent won by 11 percentage points.

“As to what he’s done with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, he can’t go away fast enough,’’ said Diodati, 42, a Fall River resident who works as a crouton manufacturer in New Bedford. He said he had personally felt the blows of the recession.

“It’s turned me upside down,’’ he said. “I’ve lost a car. I almost lost another one.

“It’s one of those things that you don’t know day to day,’’ Diodati said, adding that he hopes voters in the redrawn district will choose a successor with “better ideas and a fresh approach.’’
