They made their cultural marks performing, in some way, in Northeast Ohio.

They gave to the theater, in front of audiences or behind the scenes in support roles. They sang, belting out rock tunes, or covered those who did. They made their home with microphone in hand, produced ground-breaking albums, served delicious meals.

They were creators.

Some you might remember. Some you might not know as well. They left us this year; all are deserving of a final homage.

James B. Binns, 82, led Huntington Playhouse, Jan. 10: In 1969, Binns and two colleagues took over the nonprofit Huntington Playhouse in an old barn in Bay Village. He went on to lead the community theater for 22 years. He won local acting awards and appeared in Hollywood movies, acted with Geraldine Page off-Broadway, and acted and directed at the Cleveland Playhouse and Lakewood Little Theater. He once roomed with Dom DeLuise, and stayed in a New York apartment down the hall from Marlon Brando.

Roberts Blossom, 87, actor, July 8: Blossom, part of the civic-minded family whose name graces the Cleveland Orchestra's summer home, is best known for a movie role he took late in life: Old Man Marley, the scary neighbor who turns out to be kind, in "Home Alone." He had a successful career in movies, TV and theater, but got his start in Cleveland theater at Karamu House and Candlelight Theater. A move to New York yielded multiple roles on Broadway, four Obie awards for off-Broadway shows and a Soapy award for his work as a villain in "Another World." When he moved to Hollywood, roles followed, including parts in "The Great Gatsby," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Slaughterhouse Five" and "Escape from Alcatraz."

Peggy Buerkel, 79, actor and drama teacher, March 15: Berger was a young "curtain puller" at the Cleveland Play House and was one of the members of Dobama Theatre when it started in 1959. She appeared in productions there and with other theaters, was active in the Children's Playwriting Festival, and taught creative dramatics for children.
