how to get 6 volts out of a 12 volt battery?
Is there a simple way to do this without buying expensive parts? Cheap parts are okay, or cannibalized parts from a VCR or CD player (I have quite a few dead ones).
I'm totally clueless about electronics, but this is the project: I have a BOE-Bot and a Little Tikes Hummer H2. I removed the 12v gearboxes and 12v battery from the H2. I want to attach the motors to the BOE-Bot.
The Basic Stamp included with the Boe-Bot has an on-board 5 volt regulator and will work just fine (by itself) with 12 volt battery power.
However, the motors from the H2 are much more powerful than the continuous rotation servos used with Boe-Bot and will draw much higher currents, even if you used them at 6 volts.
You want a voltage divider:

1-use the 12 volts for the motors and get a 6volt regulator with a series resistor to drop the voltage to 6 volts to run the bot.

They make a bunch of different low power DC/DC converters on single chips that would likely work fine in converting from 12 to 6 volts (check www.newark.com). If you are needing more power from the converter, I would considering using a buck converter circuit.

Selling the 8 in 1 Little Tikes Adjustable Playground Set | Need a Transmission and Lawn Mower!
Anyway, here's what I am going to do. This Little Tikes playground set was something I purchased for the Little One. Best of all, the law mower I just bought last year stopped working. Last year, my garage was full of mowers. I know my son enjoyed crawling through the tunnel and sliding down the slides. I carefully observed his therpay sessions OT and PT sessions and we decided that the toys I purchased would help accelerate his progress. I know it will bring a lot of fun times to a little girl or boy. My son required OT, PT, speech and several other therapies that helped address social skills (although his problem is that he is too friendly. I know my neighbors are going through changes. ) My son is too big to use this set. Many people believe that therapy for autistic children consists solely of speech. I think it may be best to get another used minivan instead. Every year, I have to buy a new lawnmower. Each autistic child is different.
